Salary
£31,838 to £45,304 + 1A on-call banding per annum together
with USS/NHS benefits
The
normal expectation is that the successful applicant will be appointed to the
minimum of the agreed scale with annual increments on 1 October each year
(subject to completing six months service).
This is
a permanent position and the salary will be on the salary scale for Clinical
Academic Lecturers:
Responsibilities of
the post holder:
The appointment is for a 1:5 weekday RSO position covering
Singleton hospital for a 24 hour period to cover post-operative cross specialty
surgical patients having intermediate level surgery. In addition there
will be a 1:5 weekend cover.
In
addition the post holder will undertake teaching and/or research on the
remaining weekdays.
The
post-holder would be expected to be the principal researcher in a substantive
project.
The
post-holder will be expected to undertake a research degree by thesis (MSc by
research, MPhil, MD) in either laboratory-based tissue engineering research or
a clinical based thesis with significant national impact. It would be
expected that data for this project would be presented at appropriate surgical
and scientific meetings and published in peer reviewed journals.
The
post-holder would be expected to assist with the recruitment of patients into
existing clinical trials.
The
post-holder will be expected to attend a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course
and assist in grant writing and ethic committee applications where necessary.
The
post-holder will be expected to act as a supervisor for a number of smaller
research and audit projects currently being undertaken by junior members of the
team.
Although
the post is research or education based the post-holder will be able to
maintain and develop their clinical and surgical experience through attendance
at theatre lists, outpatient clinics on their one clinical day per week.
The
post-holder may be required to provide internal cover for departmental CT/StR
doctors during periods of absence, subject to previous experience.
The
post-holder will also be expected to teach Graduate Entry Programme Medical
Students and Clinical Medical Students as necessary in the course of the year.
Research/Teaching/Clinical: All
time allocated as research is flexible. Teaching commitments will be
incorporated into this. Theatre and other clinical involvement is as required
and flexible.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
ABMU SURGICAL DIRECTORATE / SWANSEA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL
SCHOOL
General
Surgery Services at ABM University Health Board are provided for the local
populations (over 500,000 residents) of Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend,
and South Powys; and tertiary services are provided to the wider population of
Mid and South West Wales (population 1,000,000).
Based in the ABM
University health Board, Morriston Hospital, Swansea, the Welsh Centre for
Burns and Plastic Surgery provides a service for the people of South, Mid and
West Wales. As the only centre in Wales, it is responsible for a population of
2.3 million people. In May 2010, the Welsh Centre for Burns was
designated as the Adult Burn Centre for the South West UK Burns Network,
covering a population of 10 million.
The Supra Regional
Plastic Surgery Unit has an extremely busy elective and trauma workload,
including exposure to major trauma and microsurgical upper and lower limb
reconstruction, burns surgery, skin cancer, head and neck surgery, peripheral
nerve and brachial plexus surgery, perineal and breast reconstruction, sarcoma,
paediatric, vascular anomalies, hypospadias, laser and lymphodema surgery. The
unit consists of 40 inpatient Plastic Surgery Beds, 4 bedded flap monitoring
unit, 10 inpatient burns beds and 8 bedded burns ICU.
There is a track
record of training excellence, with the unit coming top of the GMC training
survey for 3 years in a row (2012-2014), in addition to national recognition as
a leading academic plastic surgery centre. The Welsh Centre for Burns and
Plastic Surgery has a proven research track record with over 250 peer reviewed
publications and over 500 national and international presentations. The unit is
currently recruiting for several randomised controlled trials. The formal research
arm (The Reconstructive Surgery and Regenerative Medicine Research Group
(ReconRegen) was initiated in 2012, and since then has attracted funding from
the Medical Research Council (MRC), The British Association of Plastic,
Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), and the Royal College of
Surgeons of England. There is a strong track record of success on the Welsh
Clinical Academic Track (WCAT) pathway. ReconRegen is located across two main
sites, The Institute of Life Science at Swansea University & The European
Centre for Nanohealth (Wales premier purpose built 50 million medical research
facility) and a research suite at one of the Europe’s largest burns and
plastic surgery units. Hot desk facilities and Mac Access for research purposes
will be available at both sites.
The
successful applicant will be supervised by the Clinical Director, Academic Lead
and the Training Programme Director, joining a team consisting of 17
Consultants (1 Professor, 4 Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturers), 3 academic
clinical lecturers, 10 specialist registrars, 1 post doctoral researcher, 11
senior house officers, 6 nurse practitioners and 1 business & project
support Intern. There are active international academic collaborations with
Universities of Harvard and Stanford (USA), Melbourne (Australia) and Utrecht
(The Netherlands).
