Following the acquisition of Scarborough Hospital, the Trust is advancing its ambitious and exciting development of integrated services across York and Scarborough and in line with this an opportunity now exists to appoint a Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon, therefore we are now inviting applications to join the dynamic and rapidly evolving Breast team in York which may also present opportunities to work in Scarborough.
Candidates must be aware of the organisation's expectation, (where it is a requirement of the service) for them to be prepared to work across any of the Hospital sites managed by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Unit is looking to appoint a consultant with a specialist interest in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery. Competence and expertise in a comprehensive range of reconstructive techniques (native and implant based), lipomodelling would be expected and experience in pedicled and free flaps would be desirable. In addition we would look for a colleague who had skills and training in surgical techniques to compliment the expertise of the existing surgeons. We would expect the appointee to support and further strengthen this service and offer a range of resection/reconstructive techniques to facilitate the further development of this service.
The department has close links with Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) offering interested candidates opportunities for undergraduate teaching or the development of management roles within the medical school.
Scarborough is situated in a beautiful part of the country on the edge of the Yorkshire moors national park with miles of beautiful coastline on the doorstep. The historical cultural city of York is situated just 40 miles inland.
Candidates must have a higher medical qualification (FRCS or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register for Breast Surgery, or be within six months of obtaining the CCT at the time of interview. A familiarity with issues of service organisation and development would be particularly advantageous.

Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction in Breast Cancer Care, Tuesday 9th December

The aim of this meeting is to provide a ‘state of the art’ analysis of miscrosurgical reconstruction of the breast as offered to patients with breast cancer within the breast cancer multidisciplinary care team. An analysis of the timing and type of reconstruction, the influence of adjuvant therapy in breast cancer care upon reconstructive strategies, and the range of presenting challenges will be given, and related to microsurgical and aesthetic outcomes.
By the close of this meeting, the faculty and delegates will have reviewed current challenges for the microsurgical reconstruction of the breast.
Delegates will be able to list the range of options for patients presenting with a variety of challenges for breast reconstruction in the MDT, understand decision - making with respect to timing and options in microsurgical breast reconstruction and the influence of adjuvant therapies upon the results. Delegates will understand the challenges facing reconstruction for partial breast deficiencies and salvage surgery, will be able to describe the patient journey in breast cancer care, and evaluate the outcomes of ‘best practice’.
