Royal Society of Medicine - Upcoming Events


There are two excellent upcoming events in the plastic surgery section at the RSM.

Firstly on Tuesday 15th April Mr Anthony McQuillan will be speaking on Brachial Plexus Injury Management.

As usual there will be trainee case presentations. Anybody with an interesting case to present should contact Ibby Younis 

Following on from this on Tuesday 13th May The London Symposium on Reconstructive Microsurgery will take place.
This all day event has a stellar lineup of speakers and promises to be a standout meeting.
Registration for both events is open now and the May symposium is filling up fast.

European Congress on Head & Neck Oncology


The European Congress on Head and Neck Oncology (ECHNO 2014) isbeing held at The ACC, Liverpool, UK from 24-26 April 2014. 
An emphasis has been placed on addressing the need for a multidisciplinary approach to facilitate cooperation between  the various clinical and research specialties involved in the management of head and neck cancer. ECHNO 2014 will provide you with the latest research and techniques in the ongoing effort to improve the lives of patients everywhere. 

The Congress’s stellar scientific programmme will feature experts from around the world, who will facilitate stimulating debates about the most controversial topics in Proton Therapy, Robotics and Transoral Laser.

RCS Aesthetic Course: Body Contouring, Post-Bariatric Surgery, Brachioplasty & Liposuction

The aim of this one day course, to be delivered by faculty with a wealth of experience in all forms of body contouring will be to develop decision making and operative skills in relation to aesthetic body contouring. This is a course for trainees in plastic surgery and would also be very useful in supporting revision for the FRCS exam.

Content

The course will cover:
  • Pre-operative, operative and post-operative decision making process in regard to body contouring, post bariatric surgery, brachioplasty, and liposuction
  • Possible complications of these operative techniques and provide guidance as to how to avoid them
  • Examples will be shown of a range of operative techniques used in cosmetic surgery of the trunk and limbs
  • There will also be a practical session on the marking up of the  body contouring procedures discussed throughout the course
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the operations of body contouring of the trunk
  • Demonstrate the principles of various  cosmetic contouring operations
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various cosmetic operations

Learning outcomes

This course will help address some of the intermediate competencies expected by the ISCP, most specifically in the following areas:
  • Relevant embryology, anatomy and physiology of trunk
  • Appropriate pre-operative investigations and patient assessment including psychological assessment.
  • Range, indications and principles of relevant operations for body contouring
  • Post-operative complications and their management.
  • Recent advances in techniques for body contouring.
  • Blood supply and innervation of the trunk
  • Assessment of post bariatric patients prior to corrective contouring surgery
Clinical Skills
  • Assessment of the elective surgical body contouring patient
  • History taking
  • Examination
  • Skills of analysis, judgement, surgical planning
Technical Skills and Procedures
  • Various operations for abdominoplasty/ body lift surgery
  • Various operations for  thigh and arm reduction
  • Indications for liposuction and various techniques
  • Correction of gynaecomastia in relation to body contouring

It is our pleasure to invite you to submit scientific contributions for the 6th European Plastic Surgery Research Council to be held August 21-24, 2014, in Hamburg/Germany.
We would like to remind all those interested, that the abstract submission deadline is March 30, 2022.
Due to a tight schedule, abstract submission deadline will not be extended. Abstracts submitted after the deadline will not be taken into consideration!
Accepted abstracts of the long oral presentations are published as a supplement in our official organ Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Impact Factor: 3.535).
We would also advise you to register early because the Early Bird flies away soon.
