Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship

The Royal Surrey County Hospital is excited to announce that it is looking to appoint an Oncoplastic Fellow from October 2013. This supernumerary post will be based at the Royal Surrey and Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead.

The successful candidate will have experience in Oncoplastic breast surgery and be comfortable with a range of reconstructive techniques. The candidate would ideally have both parts of the FRCS and post CCT candidates will be considered.

The Fellowship is structured into three four month blocks to allow the successful candidate to focus on the essential knowledge and skills required for a modern Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon. The first placement, supervised by Miss Tracey Irvine will focus on Oncoplastic Breast conservation and reconstruction using implant based techniques and latissimus dorsi flaps. The second four months will retain a surgical component but will be supervised by Stephen Houston and Anthony Neal and will focus on breast oncology. The final four months will be based at East Grinstead and will be supervised by Martin Jones. This will allow the candidate to focus on immediate and delayed reconstruction including free flap reconstruction and symmetrisation procedures.

The Breast Unit is a leader in the management of screen detected cancer and the axilla and is the biggest user of OSNA in the UK. We offer the full range of breast conservation and reconstructive techniques and have developed a free flap service in conjunction with East Grinstead. We work closely with St Luke’s Cancer Centre which is on site and the Jarvis Screening Centre in Guildford. You will work in our dedicated laminar flow breast theatre and clinics are on site and in our outreach clinics.

Queen Victoria Hospital is the only regional Plastic Surgery Unit in the South East corner of England. It has a catchment population of just over 4 million people and serves Surrey Sussex and Kent. A great deal of breast surgery is performed here at QVH with 6 surgeons having a sub-specialist interest in breast reconstruction and 3 more with a general interest in breast surgery.

There is no general on call commitment although the successful candidate may be offered the option of evening on calls if they wish.

For further information please contact Tracey Irvine, Consultant Oncoplastic Surgeon and Clinical Director, telephone 01483 408367.

HCA International Foundation Scholarships

As a major initiative towards meeting the objective of delivering high-quality healthcare in the communities we serve, the HCA International Foundation is offering a number of Travelling Scholarships.

They are intended for candidates who wish to advance their medical and surgical training by visiting institutions abroad and in the UK in order to learn new techniques and to advance the science and practice of medicine and surgery for the ultimate benefit of patients.

Applicants for these scholarships should be consultants within 10 years of appointment or registrars on a specialist training programme, employed in any UK hospital.

Generally speaking, the techniques to be studied will be ones which are not in common practice in the UK but which will have a valuable and widespread application here.

Successful candidates will be able to use the techniques they learn directly for the benefit of their own patients. Equally important, we expect them to spread this knowledge to others in the medical profession so the practice becomes progressively more widespread.

There is no requirement for candidates to have any current connection with HCA. Scholarships are open to suitably qualified candidates from any hospital.

Please note that successful applicants will receive full or partial funding. The amount received is decided on a case by case basis by the committee and all decisions are final.
